In the heart of West Hampstead, this Victorian mid-terrace London townhouse has been thoughtfully reimagined to suit the dynamic lifestyle of our clients. Their love of travel and the outdoors shaped the foundation of the design brief: to create a home that serves both as a serene retreat and a welcoming space for entertaining.
The project was delivered in two stages. First, a side and rear ground floor expansion combined with a reconfiguration of the internal layout enhanced the connection between the living spaces and the garden beyond. Generous glazing — including a striking north-facing picture window and large rooflights — draws natural light deep into the home, creating bright, flowing interiors that support both everyday living and social gatherings.
A boot room, utility space, and bespoke kitchen were carefully crafted with built-in joinery, providing ample, practical storage for the couple’s adventure gear — and even their kayaks.
The second phase involved a full interior refurbishment, restoring and celebrating the home’s original character wherever possible. Key period features such as ornate plaster cornicing, ceiling roses, stained glass, and traditional floor tiles were meticulously reinstated. The new addition, constructed in London stock brick, sits comfortably alongside the original fabric, ensuring a cohesive and sensitive extension to the historic home.
A rebalancing of the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms allowed for the creation of a luxurious master suite. A former bedroom was converted into a spacious master bathroom and a walk-through dressing area, accessed directly from the master bedroom, bringing a sense of calm and retreat to the upper floors.
Throughout the home, a palette of warm, neutral tones enhances the character of each space, responding to the natural light and varying functions across the home. The interiors blend refined traditional craftsmanship — shaker-style cabinetry, elegant panelling, and contemporary interpretations of period sanitaryware — with a timeless, understated aesthetic.
This is a home that respects its past while fully embracing the lifestyle of its modern-day owners: a revitalised classic made for living, exploring, and entertaining.
